Statement & Biography

Mark Stafford interjects models of contemplation on a conversation typically dominated by physicists and spiritualists concerning the relationship between our consciousness and the cosmos. He focuses on how the discipline of art informs our perception of the shape of reality and blends disparate theories related to space, form, and plane to unfold the phenomena left unexplained by the conceptual frameworks devised by conjecture mathematics, comparative religions, and mystics.

A voyage influenced by his experience in vast natural environments— having grown up in Anchorage, Alaska, and Tucson, Arizona. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, he discovered his research-based practice. Showing nationally and internationally in sculpture parks, galleries, art fairs, and museums. Some favorites are Socrates Sculpture Park, SLAG Gallery SCOPE, Miami, FOCUS NY, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, Yellowstone Art Museum, Friedman Benda Gallery, Exit Art, English Kills Gallery, the Bronx Museum of Art, and Black & White Gallery.

Mark Stafford Studio’s work invites viewers on a journey through the fabric of existence, exploring where consciousness and the cosmos converge. These forms mostly manifest as wall sculptures—crafted from epoxy resin, fibers, with dry, and iridescent pigments—are immersive contemplations on spacetime, embodying the notion that life and the dimensions we inhabit are intrinsically interwoven.

This work opens a research-based practice that focuses on the positive energy we put into the universe, how we collect it once expressed, and reuse it in the outward identity that we share: our humanity. Thus, these sculptures act as portals and/or spatial expressions, transcending the self to reflect the greater cosmic order. Depending on the light, viewers either peer into an illusory depth of space or encounter a transformed vision of themselves, evoking an introspective resonance and an encounter with the sublime.  The sculptures inspire a pause—a moment to contemplate the vast, interconnected nature of reality and the mystery of existence itself.

Mark was born and raised in the vast natural landscapes of Alaska and the communities that thrive in Anchorage.  He now lives in Brooklyn, New York with his son.  He initially studied painting, printmaking, and art education in Tucson, Arizona near the wonderfully beautiful deserts.  Then went to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, where he studied sculpture, Installation, video, and performance arts.  He shows his artwork nationally and internationally in art spaces, galleries, art fairs, and museums of art.
