Statement & Biography

Mark Lawrence Stafford interjects models of contemplation on a conversation typically dominated by physicists and spiritualists concerning the relationship between our consciousness and the cosmos. He focuses on how the discipline of art informs our perception of the shape of reality and blends disparate theories related to space, form, and plane to unfold the phenomena left unexplained by the conceptual frameworks devised by conjecture mathematics, comparative religions, and mystics.

Realizing that this research-based practice is perpetually acting en medias res to the contexts we decipher and disseminate in contemporary society, his work focuses on the positive energy we put into the universe, how we collect and amplify it once expressed, and reuse it in our shared outward identity: our humanity.  Thus, these sculptures act as portals and/or spatial expressions, transcending the self to reflect the greater cosmic order.  Depending on the light, viewers either peer into an illusory depth of space or encounter a transformed vision of themselves, evoking an encounter with being or an instance of introspective resonance.

In this aesthetic experience, Mark Stafford Studio's work invites viewers on a journey through the fabric of existence, exploring where consciousness and the cosmos converge as immersive embodiments of the notion that life and the dimensions we inhabit are intrinsically interwoven.   Crafted mostly with common construction tools interacting with mediums, epoxy resins, fibers, ropes, dyes, dry pigments, and iridescent ingredients. that manifest as drawings, paintings, wall sculptures, and installations.

A voyage influenced by his youthful experiences in vast natural environments, such as Anchorage, Alaska, and Tucson, Arizona, and the staccato punctuation of an awareness interrupted by epilepsy.  Earning an MFA at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, followed by two decades of art production in New York City, he honed a process based on a model-dependent reality where theory, belief, and materials find formal and semiotic unities by denying contextual confinement.  He shows nationally and internationally in sculpture parks, galleries, art fairs, and museums. Some favorites are Socrates Sculpture Park, SLAG Gallery SCOPE, Miami Beach, FOCUS NY, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, Yellowstone Art Museum, Friedman Benda Gallery, Exit Art, English Kills Gallery, the Bronx Museum of Art, and Black & White Gallery.
